My sincere Muslim brother!
Know—may Allah guide you and me to preserve His blessings, give thanks for them and rely on Him well—that being affected by the evil eye does not necessarily mean you are the most beautiful, wealthy or highly placed person. The evil eye is real: it may affect a blessing that is visible or hidden, someone young or old, wealthy or poor. None of this happens except by Allah’s permission and decree.
Yet an intelligent believer who knows the evil eye is real neither becomes conceited nor opens his heart to obsessive fears, nor neglects the means of protection Allah has prescribed. He brings together sincere reliance on Allah, taking precautions, thinking well of Him and seeking His protection from every evil.
Among the greatest means of preserving blessings are thanking Allah, keeping up the prescribed remembrances, especially those of morning and evening, reciting the protective surahs and seeking refuge with Allah in prayer. This includes keeping some blessings from the view of people whose envy or ill intent is feared, without excessive fear or unjust suspicion of others.
It is neither fair nor sound understanding to tell everyone affected by the evil eye that they must have neglected remembrance. A believer devoted to remembrance and obedience may still be tested, for a wisdom known to Allah, just as he may be tested by other illnesses and hardships.
Whatever its cause, affliction is an opportunity to examine oneself, renew one’s sense of need for Allah, strengthen one’s relationship with Him, and attend to prescribed religious means that one may neglect in times of well-being.
Nor should every illness, fatigue or disturbance be attributed to the evil eye or envy. Illnesses have many causes. Complete reliance on Allah includes combining prescribed ruqyah and remembrance with consulting qualified specialists and using recognised medical means when needed.
Do not let your blessing become a door to self-admiration, your fear of the evil eye a door to obsessive fears, or your attachment to precautions make you forget the One who gives them effect. Preserve your blessings with gratitude, your heart with monotheism and yourself with prescribed remembrance. Take beneficial precautions, and know that Allah alone is the Protector.
The believer does not dismiss the evil eye and neglect protection, nor magnify it until he lives captive to fear. He reveres his Lord, takes appropriate precautions and rests assured that all affairs belong to Allah.
O Allah, protect us with Your protection, bless what You have provided us, and let our gratitude preserve Your blessings upon us. Keep our tongues moist with Your remembrance and our hearts filled with reliance on You. Protect us from the evil of the envious, those whose eyes cause harm, and every evil under Your control. Amen!
